How to configure MIDI Grande for Atomic Amplifire
#1
Hello! i recently purchased a midi grande 10F1D. I'm not expert with midi devices and the online manual seems to be complicated, especially in the global setting section. In particular, i'd need to know how to send PC in order to command a specific preset in the amplifire. By default, connecting the controller to Amplifire, it works in a way that program changes are mapped one to one, meaning that Amplifire switch to the same preset as the incoming midi program changes, as even written in Amplifire's manual. Thus, pressing footswitch 1 i have preset 1, pressing  footswitch 2 i have preset 2 and so on. How can i do if i want to configure it in a more flexible way so that i could recall whatever preset with whatever register?
kind regards

Hi Sandrokan, it is possible of course. For example: you want to recall preset 10 in Amplfire by pressing register 4 on MIDI Grande:
  • Press register 4 on MIDI Grande. The display shows: 14-1. The register lights red because you are in the first bank, register 4the first - red layer.
  • Press shortly Edit/Save button, you are in layer-edit mode now.
  • The display shows: 1  4 and CMD green dot and PC red dot light at the top side of the display. It means that you edit the first command, it is Program Change (PC) and its number is 4.
  • Use the <Value and Value> buttons to change to the desired program number. When you press either <Value or Value> button, the display shows actual PC number and simultaneously it is sent to MIDI OUT, so you should see the change also in Amplifire. In this example, set 1 10 for recalling the preset 10 in Amplifire.
  • Press shortly Edit/Save button, the setting is stored. The display shows: 14-1 again. You are back in regular mode.
If you want to use also the second - green layer for recalling another preset, for example 11, the configuration is very similar:
  • Press register 4 on MIDI Grande again. The display shows: 14-2. The register lights green because you are in the second - green layer of register 4 in the first bank.
  • Press shortly Edit/Save button, you are in layer-edit mode now.
  • The display shows: 1  4 and CMD green dot and PC red dot light at the top side of the display. It means that you edit the first command, it is Program Change (PC) and its number is 4 (also in the green layer of the register 4).
  • Use the <Value and Value> buttons to change to the desired program number. In this example, set 1 11 for preset 11 in Amplifire.
  • Press shortly Edit/Save button, the setting is stored. The display shows: 14-2 again. You are back in regular mode.
When you press the register 4 again, you are in the red layer and you recall preset 10 in Amplifire. When you press the register 4 again, you are in the green layer and you recall preset 11 in Amplifire. And so on.

You can also change the bank using <Bank and Bank> footswitches and program another set of presets.

Thanks for your indications, they've been very useful. I finally understood how it works! It's a great controller, difficult at the beginning, but as soon as you understand the concepts behind it everything become clear. Congratulations for your product and thanks a lot for your support!

HI, I have a 6F1D and I followed the instructions above, but seem to be having some issues.  I am simply trying to save preset 1 in the amplifire to the first bank first register.  I am using the value keys to select preset 1, then hitting save.  After hitting save and pressing the first bank, the amplifire reads "effect off." Then for some reason it is preset 4 that is saved.  I tried a different preset, for example number 14.  I saved it and then go back and somehow number 19 is saved.  The only ones I have been able to get to work are the presets that are empty.  For example saving preset 128 in the first bank worked. When selecting this preset the amplifire is reading "effect on."

I'm guessing there is some option on the amplifire that I need to get rid of, but I don't know what it is.  Any clarification would be awesome.  Thanks so much.

Hello. What does Amplifire do when you are in Edit mode on MIDi Grande and you "browse" the programs by incrementing/decrementing its edited number (pressing <Value and Value> buttons)? Does it correspond with the program number shown on the display? Or is it always 4 programs more?

Hello to Praha,

I join in because I have the same problem with 6F1D and Amplifire.
I am trying to configure a Boss FV500L as an Expression pedal for Volume.

There is a good description from you for Bo from Denmark in this Forum from 2016 which I followed.
I enabled Loop A and disabled Loop B in global level.

When trying to calibrate the Boss pedal the 6F1D will not show value 0 as a Minimum/heel and 127/toe as a maximum but displays values only from 84 to 86 in several attempts.

At a later point in the manual ("Use the <Value and Value> buttons to set number 19. The <CC#19> is used for enabling the Wah control in Amplifire. The display will show: 2 19.) while I try to step up to #20 for Volume control the Amplifire jumps from program number 000 to 003 and 008.

After finalizing the Boss pedal does not control volume but jumps between these programs/sounds.

I am sure I made a mistake but can't figure out where and when?

Ordinary program changes are no issues, I programmed several banks with 4 respective sounds for different styles and everything works well..

Thank you,
Michael/GER

Hi Michael,
first please try to ensure in which order are the signals on the Boss expression pedal. There is no standard and so there are two possible variants. MIDI Grande uses this order of singnals:
[Image: MIDI-Grande-Expression-connector-exp.png]
The "hot" side of the potentiometer should be connected on Tip and the wiper on the Ring. According to your description, the Boss volume pedal probably uses the reversed order of signals: The "hot" side of the potentiometer is connected on the Ring and the wiper is on the Tip of the output jack.

The solution is simple: reverse (resolder) the conductors on one side of your TRS ("stereo") cable, that you connect from your pedal to MIDI Grande, between Tip and Ring.

Also, I see that the "500L" model is stereo. Only one channel (left or right) can be used for controlling the volume/expression value, the second channel can be unused.

OK I soldered a reverse cable and it works. Thank you!
